Starting today, if you buy a new digital version of Blizzard’s Diablo 3, you may find yourself suddenly and inexplicably running out of game to play.  Blizzard says there’s a reason for that, and it’s meant to combat fraud.

CM Kaltonis replied to questions on this technical support thread about why digitally-purchased versions of the game begin as Starter versions of the game, then later upgrade to Full.  Kaltonis said digital purchases come with a review period of up to 72 hours before they unlock into the full version of the game, a step they said was necessary to try and combat fraud.

The Starter version of the game only includes game content up to the Skeleton King in Act 1, level 13, and no global play or Auction House use: players can group up with other Starter version players until their game is upgraded to full.

Kaltonis said the delay is also typically much quicker than three days, but that can depend on a number of customer support issues.

What do you think about making players who buy a digital version of the game wait to play?  Is it worth the inconvenience (however short it may be) to shut off an avenue for malicious users to get into the game?
